On October 6, the Ministry of Transport shared some interesting statistics via its official WeChat account regarding passenger travel during the National Day holiday. On October 5, the fifth day of the holiday, there were approximately 281.63 million cross-regional passenger trips nationwide. This marks a slight dip of 0.8% from the previous day but a 2.2% increase compared to the same time last year, and a significant 33.6% rise compared to 2019.
Diving deeper into the numbers, rail transportation recorded 17.88 million passenger trips, showing a 1.9% increase from the day before and a 5.1% rise from 2023. Looking back to 2019, rail travel was up by an impressive 31.6%.
Road transport dominated the figures with a staggering 259.85 million trips, which saw a 1% decline from the previous day. However, it still posted a 1.9% increase compared to last year and a remarkable 34.4% increase from 2019. Within this category, non-commercial passenger vehicle trips on highways and regular national and provincial roads totaled 224.05 million. This number reflected a slight drop of 1.8% from the previous day but an increase of 2.2% compared to 2023, and a striking 74.5% rise since 2019. In contrast, commercial road passenger transport logged 35.8 million trips, marking a 4.2% increase from the previous day, a modest increase of 0.5% from 2023, but a significant decrease of 44.9% from 2019.
Water transport showed a total of 1.58 million trips, experiencing a notable decline of 12.6% from the previous day, along with a 4.7% drop from 2023 and a 16.3% decrease compared to 2019.
Finally, air travel reported 2.32 million passenger trips, reflecting a 4.9% increase from the previous day, a 14.9% rise from the same period in 2023, and a 20.5% increase when compared to 2019.
