GCU Relays Countdown Begin, as Akpomudje, Majoroh Drum Support

The countdown to the sixth annual Government College Ughelli (GCU) Relays has officially begun, with just 30 days remaining until the excitement kicks off.

In a call to action, Arc. Charles Majoroh, the Immediate Past President General, along with Chief Albert Akpomudje (SAN), the President General Worldwide of GCUOBA, are encouraging greater support for the forthcoming event. With seven years of tradition behind the GCU Relays, the Tartan Tracks—generously built and donated by NNPC/SHELL—are in urgent need of repairs.

“We need to focus on patching up the worn sections of the track for the short-term,” Majoroh remarked. Yet, Akpomudje is advocating for more enduring solutions. “We must reach out to Corporate Nigeria, especially NNPC/SHELL, to secure a more comprehensive renovation of the Tracks,” he stressed.

This year’s competition promises to be fierce, with traditional powerhouses like Hussey and Urhobo College facing off against rising challengers, including Federal Government College Warri and Novena University Staff College, Kwale. The host team, Government College, Ughelli, also aims to make an impressive showing after last year’s success in modern kits donated by Ancient Mariner, Sir Joseph Arumemi-Ikhide.

As the stakes rise and rewards improve, spectators can anticipate thrilling showdowns as established contenders go head-to-head with ambitious newcomers. The quest for intercollegiate athletic glory is heating up; only time will tell which teams will meet the challenge. New talents are bound to emerge, rivalries are escalating, and excitement is building as legacy schools vie for honors in this year’s Race for Glory.

A primary goal of the GCU Relays is to cultivate healthy interactions among secondary schools and students from various states across the Federation.

Mark your calendars for November 9th—this date marks the thrilling sixth edition of the GCU Relays, an initiative driven by the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association Worldwide.
