Learn from the past and learn history from the General Secretary丨Walking into this memorial hall and exploring the reason for -worshiping Gu Gong first, then worshiping the ancestors-

On October 15th, President Xi Jinping visited the Gu Wenchang Memorial Hall in Dongshan County, Fujian Province, where he explored the local efforts to preserve the revolutionary spirit. Dongshan Island, located in southern Fujian, is often referred to as the “Oasis of the East China Sea.” However, it may surprise many to learn that this lush, ecologically rich island was once a barren land ravaged by wind and sand.

In a somber reflection, it is noted that when Gu Wenchang, a former county secretary, first arrived in Dongshan in the 1950s, he encountered a desolate island where the local residents struggled to survive in the face of relentless sandstorms. “The winds howl, and the sands rise, while the people suffer in despair,” he witnessed firsthand the harsh conditions that forced families to wander in search of food.

Gu made it his mission to combat the harsh realities of his new home. “To eradicate the poverty rooted in Dongshan, we must first tame the sands,” he declared, embarking on an arduous journey alongside the local community to reclaim their land. Despite facing failures, Gu’s resolve never wavered. He famously proclaimed, “If I cannot conquer the sands, then let them bury me.”

Through countless experiments and innovations, Gu led the people in constructing earthen dikes, planting grass, and establishing forests to combat the sand. He identified the “Casuarina” tree as the most suitable species for Dongshan’s environment, initiating a massive reforestation effort. By 1964, local initiatives had successfully transformed over 82,000 acres, establishing a “green barrier” along the coast that effectively shielded the island.

Today, Dongshan Island resembles a “green butterfly,” gracefully spreading its wings across the southeastern coast of China.

In addition to addressing the issues of sandstorms and re-greening the island, during his tenure in Dongshan, Gu oversaw the construction of more than 20 reservoirs and over 700 permanent water conservation projects. His work greatly alleviated water scarcity for both agriculture and residents, ultimately fulfilling the community’s long-held dreams of transforming barriers into pathways.

Gu Wenchang was known for his commitment to the party and the people, his pragmatic approach, and his willingness to take responsibility. Early in his career, he proposed changing the designation of “enemy dependents” to “disaster victims,” a change that resonated well with the local population and garnered their support. President Xi Jinping has often spoken highly of Gu Wenchang, describing him as a “model county secretary” and a “paragon of truthfulness,” emphasizing that those who win the people’s trust do so through genuine service.

After Gu’s passing, respecting his last wishes, local residents buried his ashes in Chishan Forest on Dongshan Island. Each year during the Qingming Festival, families visit Gu’s gravesite to pay homage and offer flowers before honoring their ancestors, thus establishing the tradition of “First honoring Gu, then revering our ancestors.”

The legacy of Gu Wenchang continues to inspire. Following his demise, he was affectionately honored by the local community with the title “Gong,” highlighting his lasting impact. President Xi has repeatedly referenced Gu’s contributions, noting that his dedication and quiet efforts over the years resulted in lasting benefits for future generations, creating an immortal monument in the hearts of the people. Gu’s principles remain relevant: he believed that the well-being of the people should always come first, and that any action harming the party’s integrity, no matter how trivial, should be avoided. His life was a testament to selflessness and unwavering commitment to the public good.

Today, Gu Wenchang’s legacy serves as a beacon, encouraging officials and community leaders to emulate his virtues, maintain a profound love for the people, and diligently fulfill their responsibilities in service to the public.
