American star Gauff wins China Open women’s singles title for the first time

On October 6, 2024, the China Open wrapped up with an exhilarating final at the National Tennis Center in Beijing. American tennis sensation Coco Gauff, the former U.S. Open champion, displayed her remarkable talent by overpowering Czech player Marketa Vondrousova, a past French Open finalist, in just 76 minutes, finishing with scores of 6-1, 6-3. This victory marks Gauff’s first title at the China Open.

In their previous matchups, Gauff had dominated Vondrousova, winning both encounters in straight sets during last year’s WTA Cincinnati final and the U.S. Open semifinals. In the finals this year, Gauff was in exceptional form, showcasing her powerful serves and precise backhands. She broke her opponent’s serve early in the first set and maintained her momentum, closing out the set at 6-1.

The second set began with Vondrousova breaking Gauff’s serve first, but Gauff quickly responded by breaking back. From there, she asserted her dominance, breaking Vondrousova’s serve two more times to secure the set at 6-3, clinching the women’s singles title.

This victory marks the eighth career title for the 20-year-old Gauff and breaks her nine-month title drought, which dates back to her win at the WTA 250 event in Auckland in January.

Before the tournament, Gauff and Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz paid a visit to the Forbidden City while wearing traditional Chinese attire, both of whom ended up winning their respective singles titles. After her victory, Gauff humorously commented during her post-match interview, “Thanks to the Forbidden City for bringing me good luck.”

In women’s doubles, the Italian pair of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paoline, the reigning Olympic champions, captured their first China Open title, defeating the Taiwanese duo of Hsieh Su-wei and Russian player Kudermetova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. This victory marks their fourth doubles title of the season, following wins at the WTA 500 in Linz, the WTA 1000 in Rome, and the Paris Olympics.
