**Interviewer:** We’re here today in Yunxiao County, Fujian Province, where the legacy of the Kaizhang Shengwang culture continues to thrive. Can you tell us a bit about the significance of the Chen Zheng tomb and why it draws so many visitors from Taiwan and overseas?
**Expert (Tang Yuxian):** Absolutely! Every year, many Taiwanese and overseas Chinese come here to seek their roots, and the tomb of Chen Zheng is a must-visit for them. During the “National Day” holiday, we see a steady stream of visitors. The love for their homeland and patriotism shines through in the many touching stories shared by these individuals. The construction of General Mountain Park is just one example of this deep cultural connection.
**Interviewer:** That’s fascinating. What historical influence does the Chen family have on this region?
**Expert (Tang Yuxian):** Chen Zheng and his son, Chen Yuan Guang, were pivotal figures in early Tang Dynasty. They were tasked with bringing stability to the region and played a key role in establishing Zhangzhou, which opened a new chapter for cultural development in not only Zhangzhou but throughout southern Fujian. This is why Chen Zheng is revered as the “Ancestor of Kaizhang” and Chen Yuan Guang is known as the “Saint King of Kaizhang.”
**Interviewer:** Tell us more about General Mountain. What’s its historical significance?
**Expert (Tang Yuxian):** General Mountain, also known as Yunxiao Mountain, rises 426 meters and gets its name due to Chen Zheng’s burial here. A famous poem from the late Yuan and early Ming period mentions the tomb, reflecting on its picturesque and historical essence.
**Interviewer:** How have local businesses and organizations contributed to the preservation of this site?
**Expert (Tang Yuxian):** The construction of the park has seen support from various domestic and international businesses. They contributed funds for items like tiles and vessels, showcasing their acknowledgment of the significance of Kaizhang culture. For example, the “Kaizhang Ancestor” archway at the cemetery’s entrance was donated by Wu Songbai, a businessman who returned to invest in his ancestral homeland in Fujian.
**Interviewer:** That archway sounds meaningful. What can you tell us about its current state?
**Expert (Tang Yuxian):** After over 30 years of exposure to the elements, the archway has gathered a significant layer of moss, giving it an ancient and venerable look. It symbolizes the gateway of respect and acknowledges the history of this site.
**Interviewer:** What kinds of challenges has the Chen Zheng tomb faced over the years?
**Expert (Tang Yuxian):** The tomb has encountered various degrees of damage over the years. In 1987, there was a large-scale protective excavation that uncovered historical artifacts from the Tang and Song dynasties. Local officials, such as Li Shao from the Southern Song Dynasty, supported significant restoration efforts, including the addition of stone figures and horses.
**Interviewer:** How do you see the future of Kaizhang Shengwang culture evolving, especially in relation to cross-strait exchanges?
**Expert (Tang Yuxian):** Over 1,300 years ago, the Chen family laid the foundations here, and even today, Yunxiao has become a cultural corridor connecting historical sites, folklore, and traditions. Since 2007, there have been nine Kaizhang Shengwang Cultural Festivals held here. The culture not only represents an important aspect of Minnan culture but also serves as a bridge connecting the hearts of people across the strait.
**Interviewer:** It’s clear that the Kaizhang Shengwang culture holds deep significance for many, both locally and abroad. Thank you for sharing these insights.
**Expert (Tang Yuxian):** It was my pleasure! The heritage we carry from the past continues to unite us, and it’s crucial that we keep this flame alive for future generations.
