During the National League Division Series Game 3, the New York Mets showcased a strong performance, defeating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-2, with standout contributions from Pete Alonso and Jesse Winker, who both hit home runs. Mets pitcher Sean Manaea had an impressive outing, allowing just one run over seven innings, giving the team a 2-1 series lead.
In the second inning, Alonso targeted Phillies ace Aaron Nola, launching a leadoff home run to right field. Winker followed suit in the fourth inning, also with a homer, while Nola struggled in the sixth, surrendering a hit and two walks, leaving the bases loaded before he exited the game. The Mets capitalized on the situation, as Starling Marte hit a two-out, two-run single, extending their lead to 4-0.
Alonso finished the game with one hit in two at-bats and two walks. Notably, he had also homered in the previous game against the Phillies, bringing his postseason tally to three homers when including the Wild Card matchup.
Manaea dominated on the mound, yielding only two hits and no runs through his seven innings of work, though he was pulled after giving up a hit in the eighth. The Phillies managed to score in that inning, with Bryce Harper delivering a timely hit that broke the shutout.
Throughout his seven innings, Manaea threw 91 pitches, struck out six batters, and walked two, finished the night with a respectable ERA of 2.25, and earned the win. Nola, on the other hand, threw 86 pitches over five innings, giving up five hits, including two home runs, and allowing four runs while fanning eight and walking two, resulting in an ERA of 7.20.
As Manaea left the field, Mets fans applauded his performance. He reflected on the experience, stating, “It’s really an honor to receive such a warm welcome from these fans. They’ve been amazing all year, and being able to pitch like this against the Phillies is an unforgettable experience.”
