French football star Antoine Griezmann announced his retirement from the national team today, concluding a remarkable decade representing France. Griezmann was instrumental in leading the team to victory in the 2018 World Cup.
In a moving message on social media platform X, Griezmann shared, “With a heart full of memories, I close this chapter of my life. After an incredible ten years, it is with deep emotion that I announce my retirement from the French national team.”
At 33, Griezmann has held the position of vice-captain for the national team and currently plays as a forward for Atletico Madrid in La Liga. He made his senior national team debut in March 2014, previously playing for France at the U-19, U-20, and U-21 levels from 2010 to 2012.
Throughout his national team career, Griezmann appeared in 137 matches, making him one of the most capped players in history—second only to former teammate Hugo Lloris, who has 145 appearances, and 1998 World Cup champion Lilian Thuram, who played 142 times.
Notably, Griezmann earned the title of Man of the Match in the 2018 World Cup final, where France secured a 4-2 victory over Croatia.
