Norris is riding high into this break after clinching a commanding victory in Singapore, where he finished an impressive 21 seconds ahead of Verstappen, closing the championship gap to 52 points. With up to 180 points still available—including points for fastest laps and sprint races—Norris knows he has a tough road ahead. He needs to outpace Verstappen by nearly nine points per race, fully aware that the title remains firmly in the reigning champion’s grasp.
Amid these challenges, McLaren is feeling confident. After implementing significant upgrades for the Miami Grand Prix, their car has outperformed Verstappen’s Red Bull, which had brought him seven victories in the first ten races. Norris commented on the remarkable performance of the McLaren, expressing optimism that the team can maintain their momentum in the upcoming races.
A key factor in McLaren’s recent success has been their upgraded floor, which has enhanced airflow and overall aerodynamics. The team’s solid performance has encouraged them to take a cautious approach moving forward, opting for limited changes to avoid disrupting their current momentum. Team Principal Andrea Stella remarked, “When you have this kind of performance on track, you always approach things from a cautious point of view in terms of development.”
Conversely, Red Bull is encountering a more complex situation. Verstappen has characterized their car as a “monster,” pointing out balance issues that have arisen from the upgrades made since Miami, particularly related to the floor design. Team Principal Christian Horner referred to their current challenges as a “vicious circle.” Although Verstappen managed a commendable second place in Singapore despite the car’s struggles, the team recognizes the need to regain competitive pace to hold off Norris.
With a month of preparation ahead, Horner acknowledges the urgency of addressing performance issues, stating, “We’ve got the best part of a month to work hard and try and bring some performance to the car in Austin.” He emphasized that with six races still remaining, there are ample opportunities for significant shifts in the standings.
This break also provides an opportunity for Liam Lawson to adjust to his new role within the Red Bull team, stepping in to replace Daniel Ricciardo after the Singapore GP. The 22-year-old New Zealander has shown promise as a reserve driver but has faced criticism regarding the handling of Ricciardo’s departure, particularly concerning the timing of the announcement.
