Support groups within Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step in amidst the escalating conflict between former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over financial misconduct allegations.
The coalition claims that the former governor is being unfairly targeted, asserting that their appeal is based on Bello’s long-standing contributions to the progress of the APC. In a joint statement, Victor Odunlana, Coordinator of APC Youths Connect (APCYC), and Musa Kassim Bello, Chairman of APC Unity Mandate (APCUM), emphasized the importance of fairness and equity from the EFCC in combating corruption, criticizing the agency for what they view as selective practices.
“Former Governor Bello is an invaluable asset to our party. No one matches his commitment and support for the APC. He has consistently been present at our rallies and has covered expenses for delegations from other states during our events,” Odunlana stated.
He continued, “President Tinubu needs to be cautious of internal enemies who are scheming to undermine our party, utilizing every tactic, including the anti-corruption agency, to obstruct our administration. We want to make it clear that this is not just about the former governor; it’s about speaking the truth.”
The groups further asserted, “Those targeting Yahaya Bello are essentially attacking Tinubu and the APC. We will not stand idly by while this occurs. The EFCC needs to recognize that this is not a matter of personal conflict with a former governor; it’s a fight involving the entire APC family.”
They concluded by highlighting the hypocrisy of the situation, noting, “Some politicians, who have been caught in wrongdoing, are being exempted from accountability and are still holding significant positions within the party and government. They are influencing the lives of the people without any sense of integrity or shame.” According to these groups, the former governor deserves far better treatment from the party than what they characterize as persecution.
