The 16th BRICS Leaders’ Meeting is set to take place in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24. Let’s take a closer look at this historic city.

Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan in the Russian Federation, is nestled on the left bank of the Volga River. It stands alongside Moscow and St. Petersburg as one of Russia’s three major historical and cultural centers. The Kazan Kremlin, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a testament to the city’s rich heritage.

Kazan has earned the title of Russia’s sports capital, hosting various international events, including the 27th Summer Universiade in 2013, the 16th FINA World Championships in 2015, and the 21st FIFA World Cup in 2018 as one of the host cities. This trend continues with the upcoming 45th WorldSkills Competition in 2019 and the inaugural International Esports Event “Future Games” in 2024, along with the BRICS Games.

Recently, on September 7-8, 2023, the inaugural “Sprout: Russia-China Mutually Beneficial Cooperation” forum was held in Kazan. Moreover, on September 28, 2024, Eastern Airlines launched its direct flight from Shanghai to Kazan.
