The Indonesian president’s internet celebrity cat lives in his official residence and the military strongman loves to tease him
As Indonesia’s newly inaugurated President Prabowo Subianto took office on October 20, a feline companion named Bobby made headlines by moving into the presidential palace with him. Bobby, Prabowo’s beloved cat, has gained immense popularity on social media, particularly during the election season, where his presence starkly contrasts with the president’s military background.
Bobby’s charm has attracted a slew of Indonesian celebrities eager to snap selfies with him. Notable figures such as Mulan Jameela, a member of the Great Indonesia Movement Party, and business mogul Anindya Bakrie shared photos with Bobby on their social media accounts.
Having a military background, Prabowo settled into the “Independence Palace,” bringing along Bobby shortly after being sworn in. Bobby was adopted by Prabowo in 2017 from the streets of South Jakarta and has since amassed 650,000 followers on Instagram, frequently becoming a subject of interest for Indonesian media.
The day following Prabowo’s inauguration, Bobby’s Instagram account shared a delightful video featuring the president gently stroking him in a pet stroller, asking, “Want to see your new room?” The heartwarming clip has since garnered over 7.15 million views and more than 330,000 likes.
The pet stroller itself sparked conversations, with CNBC Indonesia reporting that it is priced at 6.2 million Indonesian rupiah (approximately $396).
Bobby isn’t Prabowo’s only pet; he also has three other cats named Mika, Miki, and Miko. Bobby’s rise to fame began in 2019 when Prabowo fed him during a meeting of the Great Indonesia Movement Party, capturing the attention of netizens.
During the presidential election process in February this year, Bobby once again found himself in the media spotlight as Prabowo frequently shared photos of them together, ultimately solidifying the image of the president’s cherished cat in the hearts of many.
