Harris praises John Kelly for sending ‘911 call’ to the US over Trump’s fitness to serve

During a CNN town hall in Pennsylvania, Vice President Kamala Harris discussed her views on Donald Trump’s candidacy with Anderson Cooper, asserting that she believes he is “unfit to serve.” Harris commended Trump’s former chief of staff for issuing a “911 call” regarding the ex-president’s suitability for office, characterizing Trump as a “fascist” leading the nation toward perilous outcomes.

At the event, held in Delaware County on Wednesday, Harris faced a group of undecided voters as Pennsylvania’s swing-state status looms large in the presidential election. While addressing a range of topics, from living costs to abortion rights, Harris consistently redirected the dialogue back to concerns about Trump’s capability to hold office.

This town hall took place a day after The Atlantic published an article featuring former Trump advisors revealing the ex-president’s alarming remarks about military leadership, which included a desire for “the kind of generals that Hitler had.” In the piece, former chief of staff John Kelly detailed Trump’s ongoing disrespect for military personnel, a claim that the Trump campaign has since refuted.

Harris told Cooper, “I do believe that Donald Trump is unstable, increasingly unstable, and unfit to serve. The people who know him best—the ones who worked with him in the White House—have made it clear that he has contempt for the Constitution and should never again hold the presidency.” She went on to predict that if Trump were to win a second term, he wouldn’t have advisors like Kelly around to help mitigate his behavior.

“Kelly is sending out a 911 call to the American people,” she emphasized. “And this time, we must take seriously those who knew him best—career professionals who won’t be there to hold him back.”

When Cooper directly asked if she considered Trump a fascist, Harris replied emphatically, “Yes, I do.”

Throughout the hour, while critiquing Trump’s character and agenda, Harris sometimes refrained from tackling more challenging policy questions posed by Cooper and the audience. One of her more significant responses came when she acknowledged the need for Democrats to reconsider the filibuster to improve abortion access across the nation. She highlighted that Democrats plan to restore Roe v. Wade if they reclaim the White House and Congress, but the filibuster could block such efforts, an obstacle faced by President Biden’s legislative agenda as well.

While her willingness to amend the filibuster might resonate with the Democratic base, other responses left some progressives wanting more. For instance, Harris reiterated her opposition to a ban on fracking and gave a nuanced answer regarding the situation in Gaza. Responding to a question from voter Annalise Kean about protecting Palestinian lives from U.S. funded military actions, Harris said, “Far too many innocent Palestinian civilians have been killed. It’s unconscionable, and we have an opportunity now to end this war, bring home the hostages, and work toward a two-state solution.”

Amid the political discourse, Harris also touched on personal themes, sharing insight into the role of faith in her life and recalling her daily prayers. Towards the town hall’s conclusion, Cooper inquired about her experience with grief following the death of her mother due to cancer 15 years prior. “You don’t stop grieving,” she reflected. “It’s important to remember them as they lived, not as they died.”

With less than two weeks until Election Day, Harris and Trump appear to be in a tightly contested race, heavily influenced by pivotal battleground states like Pennsylvania. In her closing remarks, Harris returned to the theme of Trump’s instability, citing his recent rhetoric about Democrats as “the enemy from within” as proof of his unsuitability for leadership. “He’s going to sit there—unstable, unhinged, plotting his revenge,” she asserted. “My focus is on addressing the issues you all raised today, creating a to-do list for the American people.”
