The theme exhibition -Tan Kah Kee and Overseas Chinese Finance- is on display in Quanzhou, the hometown of overseas Chinese
On October 17, 2023, a themed exhibition titled “Chen Jiageng and Overseas Chinese Finance” opened at the Quanzhou Overseas Chinese Historical Museum, marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of the renowned patriotic leader Chen Jiageng. During the event, the Quanzhou-themed “Overseas Chinese Heart Card” was introduced, aimed at providing overseas Chinese with exclusive financial services and facilitating remittances.
Interviewed about the significance of the exhibition, Wang Li, a director at the Singapore Chen Jiageng Foundation, stated, “Mr. Chen made tremendous contributions not only in education but also showcased exceptional foresight and wisdom in the financial sector.” He emphasized that Fujian, as a major economic province on China’s southeastern coast, is currently in a phase of rapid development, particularly in financial innovation and cross-border investments. He believes leveraging the strength of the overseas Chinese community can attract more international capital, thereby modernizing Fujian’s financial market.
Wang went on to highlight the entrepreneurial spirit and international perspective of the overseas Chinese. “They play a crucial role in promoting multinational investments and collaborative projects. Establishing cross-border funds and investing in infrastructure and emerging industries can create win-win situations,” he explained.
On the same day, six representatives of overseas Chinese businesses from countries including the Philippines, Singapore, and Germany became the first users of the Quanzhou-themed “Overseas Chinese Heart Card.” This exclusive bank card was designed with the mission of creating a sense of home for overseas Chinese and fostering a unified community across borders.
Additionally, the Quanzhou Overseas Chinese Federation signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Quanzhou branch of Xiamen International Bank. The Quanzhou Overseas Chinese Historical Museum also reached a strategic collaboration with Jiuyou Bank to establish a service platform for overseas Chinese finances, aiming to enhance service efforts for the community and advance research in overseas Chinese cultural preservation.
Notably, Jiuyou Bank was founded by Chen Jiageng in 1943, with the goal of raising stable long-term funds to support educational development in his hometown and facilitate remittances back home. After the transfer of shares in 2017, Jiuyou Bank became a subsidiary of Xiamen International Bank.
The “Chen Jiageng and Overseas Chinese Finance” exhibition features rich historical materials, precious photographs, and engaging displays, offering a heartfelt reflection on Chen Jiageng’s legacy. His narrative highlights establishing connections between overseas Chinese funds and the nation’s construction, encouraging overseas Chinese to invest in their homeland, and embodying a spirit of resilience and self-improvement. The exhibition will run until November 17.
