Pizza accidentally laced with THC sickens dozens at Wisconsin restaurant

In a recent incident that has raised concerns among customers, Famous Yeti’s Pizza in Stoughton, Wisconsin, accidentally served pizza contaminated with THC, the active compound in marijuana. The health department in Dane County reported that the restaurant served this potentially harmful pizza from Monday through Thursday, resulting in numerous customers falling ill.

On Thursday, paramedics informed health officials that they had transported five individuals who reported feeling unwell after dining at Famous Yeti’s. Following this, health officials began receiving multiple reports of sickness linked to the pizza, and they are still compiling data, with a final report expected soon.

According to officials, a restaurant cook faced a shortage of cooking oil and inadvertently grabbed a jug containing Delta-9 THC from a shared commercial kitchen located in the same building. While marijuana remains illegal in Wisconsin, THC products derived from hemp are permitted, and the questioned oil is known to be used in various food items, ranging from cookies to sauces.

Common symptoms associated with THC consumption can include dizziness, increased heart rate, vomiting, anxiety, paranoia, and even hallucinations. Cale Ryan, co-owner of Famous Yeti’s Pizza, explained that the mix-up occurred when the cook mistakenly used the wrong oil, contaminating one batch of dough intended for 60 pizzas. Ryan noted that he had heard from approximately 20 affected customers.

“They’re getting really stoned,” Ryan remarked. “They’re intoxicated from the THC, which is more alarming than anything to feel that way. It’s essentially like consuming an edible without any knowledge of it.”
